Neil's in Alabama

Neil is part of a trip from Liverpool to Alabama, reversing the final leg of the Atlantic Slave trade. Neil arrived in Alabama on 01 Oct and has already spoken in a few churches, met a local Senitor, been to a music festival and eaten McDonalds - a busy few days.

The last recorded slave ship to land on American soil was in the town of Mobile, Alabama. This is where Neil and the team will be spending most of their time, building relationships, visiting churches and talking with community groups.

Here is a quick (and very basic) history lesson; slave ships carried goods from Europe (including Liverpool) to the African coast where enslaved Africans were purchased and shipped to the Americas. The produce of slave labour (i.e. cotton, sugar, tobbaco etc) were then shipped back to Europe for sale.

St James has a history linked to slavery, records show that Liverpool Merchants involved in the trade worshiped at the church. As a community we have a passion to raise issues of peace and justice and recognise that although slavery has been abolished it is still a huge industry globally in the form of human traffiking. One of our purpose groups (peace and justice) campaign and raise the profile of slavery amongst our generation.
