09 May 2010: Gift Day

Bishop James Jones has a vision to launch a new Church to reach out to the students of Liverpool and the ever increasing city centre population. The project started in July 2007. The preferred option was to redevelop St James, a church which had been closed since 1971, required £2m of refurbishment and was owned by The Churches Conservation Trust. Since then remarkable progress has been made.

  • The building has been divested back to the Diocese of Liverpool.
  • The Parish of St James in the City has been established.
  • The Berkeley Foundation has been appointed as project managers. Ambitious plans have been put together to not only refurbish the Church, but also build community facilities, a garden of remembrance and a memorial to the international slave trade in the graveyard. These plans extend beyond the immediate church site to include a housing development on adjacent land.
  • The growing congregation has been meeting in a marquee inside the church at 4pm each Sunday. Average attendance is now 45 adults and 7 children.
  • Dr James Harding a member of the congregation has been appointed as the university chaplain to John Moore’s and Liverpool Universities. We have a growing number of students and have attracted students from China, India, Pakistan, Canada and USA.

THE NEXT STEP
Because the church roof is leaking and causing damage to the fabric, we are working to replace it this year before the bad weather sets in. English Heritage has outlined the following steps and has granted us £14,000 to carry out the preliminary work. Firstly, a condition report for the structure of the whole building. Secondly, assuming the roof is the priority element, removing some of the slates to discover the extent of the roof work required. Thirdly and finally replacing the roof.
The estimated cost of the roof repairs is in the region of £250,000. We anticipate receiving the bulk of this money through grants but expect to have a shortfall.

GIFT DAY
Please join us in praying for the continued development of the project and particularly about your part in financing the next stage.
We have set aside Sunday 9th May 2010 as a Gift Day for the building project. Reaching our target will not only enable us to replace the roof but will be a stepping stone to refurbishing the rest of the church which we aim to do in 2012.

Please download our Gift Day booklet for ways to support us.

13 Jan 10: Purpose Group Evening

The idea for this evening is for each Purpose Group to explain what they did last term and what they have planned for new term.

This will be an encouraging night, giving us an opportunity to restate the St James values, and a chance for new members to join a group ready for the new term/year.

The leaders of each group will present a short presentation outlining the purpose of each group, what they have already done in the past, and any plans for the future.

The groups are:  Peace and Justice; Guerrilla Greening ; Film and Art; Caring for International students; Toxteth youth leaders.

Rob Sykes will be catering for the evening, and with past products being ‘Christmas in a roll’ and ‘Mulled wine in a kettle’, this will be one not to miss!

Come along to St James House on 13 January at 7.30pm.

22 Nov 09: Neil’s induction service

On 22 November, we will be holding a massive celebration in St James church: Neil is being officially inducted as vicar of St James in the city’s parish.

This is not only a celebration for Neil and other leaders being anointed for service, but also the church coming back to life.  Bishop James Jones is speaking and there will be a full worship band as well as opportunity for anybody to recommit themselves to service.

Make sure you keep this date free to come down and be part of this massive step for St James in the city.  Parking is available at St James House (next to the Anglican Cathedral) and food will be provided there afterwards.
